Cesarean birth (c-section) is sometimes necessary for the health of either Mother or Baby, but when it is necessary, it can still be done with respect, dignity and in a gentle way that can preserve and protect your memory of birth.

This week of childbirth class we will take you through options for preferences should a cesarean birth become necessary and will help to prepare you to have a safe, satisfying cesarean. We will address questions to ask your doctor or midwife to explore the options for you have for a gentle cesarean birth, (also sometimes called woman-centered cesarean technique) including skin-to-skin, delayed cord clamping, updates throughout the birth, and the ability to ask questions during the birth.

You will hear stories from families who had an opportunity for a gentle cesarean, how it effects breastfeeding outcomes, and postpartum depression, and ways to support a mother during a cesarean.  We will also share with you resources for vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC).

With contributions from: Debra Pascali-Bonaro, Orgasmic Birth, Lonnie Morris, CNM, Penny Simkin, Hélène Vadeboncoeur, Ph.D, Rachel Connolly-Kwock, InJoy, Valeriana Pasqua Masback, Elizabeth Mangum-Sarach
